This car has been my partners daily driver for two years. It has never let her down. The only reason we want rid is that we are expecting a second child next month and she is getting a car with more doors and a bigger boot once the Golf sells.
Although the car has 176k miles on it, it uses no oil and regularly returns a fuel economy over 40mpg. The seats are comfortable; several times we have driven up North, over 300 miles without stopping. Tyres are Continental and have loads of tread. Brakes are disks on all four wheels and perform great.
The car is taxed and tested until April 2004. The car passed it's last 2 MOT's first time.
The car has a few areas that could do with attention. The main area of concern is the clutch. If you drive it hard, the clutch will slip until you ease off a bit. We've got used to it this way and we find that we can drive it without the clutch slipping! Another area that may give problems in the future is the gearbox. It's noisy. Always has been since we've had it. A clutch change would be a perfect opportunity to replace the gearbox if it bothers you. The sunroof doesn't work (did until about 2 weeks back) as mentioned above. The bodywork is typical of a car with such mileage, there are one or two minor dents - just car park stuff. The bonnet has a crease in it due to some drunk sitting on it. There are signs of rust in about 3 or 4 places.
